When you set a foot outside of your door to drop litter, go to a social event or go for a walk, thoughts like “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” or “please don’t talk to me may run through your mind”. I’ve also said such things to myself. Sometimes the last thing you want to do is to talk with someone, especially someone new.
Why do we go out of our ways to avoid people Do we think meeting new people is a waste of time Or are we just lazy, thinking that meeting someone new really is a trouble
Communication is the key to life. We have been told that many times. Take the past generations, like our parents, for example. They seem to take full advantage of that whole “communication” idea because they grew up talking face to face while Generation Y grew up staring at screens.
We spend hours of our days sitting on Facebook. We send messages to our friends and think about all of the things we want to say to certain people.
Nowadays, we are so caught up in our little circle of friends—our comfort zone. We love it that they laugh at our jokes, understand our feelings and can read our minds. Most importantly, they know when we want to be alone. They just get us.
Holding a conversation with someone new means agreeing with things that you don’t actually believe and being someone you think they want you to be — it is, as I said before, a trouble. It takes up so much energy, and at some point or another, it is too tiring.
But meeting new people is important. Life is too short, so meet all the people you can meet, make the effort to go out and laugh. Remember, Every “hello” leads to a smile — and a smile is worth a lot.;
4. What do we learn about the author
A.He likes to be alone.
B.He feels stressed out lately.
C.He’s active in attending social events.
D.He’s afraid of talking to others at times.;
5. What’s the problem of Generation Y in the author’s eyes
A.They rely on the Internet to socialize.
B.They are less confident about themselves.
C.They have difficulty in communicating.
D.They are unwilling to make new friends.;
6. Why do many young people avoid meeting new people
A.They think it is troublesome.
B.They are busy with their study.
C.They fear to disappoint their old friends.
D.They want to take time to do meaningful work .;
7. Why does the author write the text
A.To tell about the importance of friends.
B.To give tips on how to meet new people.
C.To encourage people to meet new people.
D.To introduce the disadvantages of Generation Y.
C
You should always support your kids and their natural talents. And if you nurture them, great things will happen. That's what 9-year-old Joe Whale's parents thought when they encouraged their son to keep drawing, even though he got into trouble for doodling (涂鸦) during class.
They sent Joe to an after-school art class and his artistic abilities were quickly noticed by those around him. In fact, Joe was invited to decorate the dining room of the “Number 4” restaurant in Shrewsbury, England. Now, Joe is known as The Doodle Boy and has his own website, as well as social media pages showing off his awesome art.
According to Greg, Joe's dad, his son has always loved drawing and "was added to the Gifted register in primary school aged 4”. Greg also revealed how long it took Joe to finish his drawings on the dining room walls in the restaurant. "Joe spent about 12 hours illustrating the wall.”
What's more, Greg had some proposals for parents who want to encourage their kids to develop their talent: "I would advise parents to encourage their children to always follow their passion and dreams - research local workshops or groups within your local community ”
Joe's teacher recognized his talent and posted his work on Instagram. His drawings caught the eye of the “Number 4" restaurant which asked him to come over and decorate their walls with his doodles. Now, his dad drives him there so he can draw his heart out. Who knew that drawing in an after-class program would lead Joe to get his first job at barely 9 years old

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station(加油站)about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford " I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

Parents and kids alike love sports, and it is easy to get caught up in a game and become focused on winning. 16 When children and teens are involved in sports, they are also able to learn and put into practice values that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
17 Whether your team wins or loses, you should show respect for the effort of the other team. If the other team wins, accept defeat, acknowledge their abilities, and move on. If your team wins, you shouldn’t brag (自吹自擂) ---- that’s what it means to be a gracious winner.
Sportsmanship requires that players never cheat. It might seem easier to win by doing things in a different way like cheating, but everyone has to follow the rules because they ensure sports can be played in an organized way. Good sportsmen want to win because they follow the rules and train hard. 18 Cheating is not acceptable.
In youth sports, it is important to encourage even those players who are the least skilled to have fun playing in the game. Parents, coaches, and even other players have an important role in allowing less talented teammates to take part. 19
Team sports work best when each individual supports the team. Praise teammates for what they do well and encourage them when they make mistakes. 20 Parents should model this behavior for children by praising them for specific things they have done well, even if they made a mistake or may not have played as well as hoped.

Once upon a time there lived a stone cutter who was dissatisfied with his life. One day, on his way to work, he passed by a beautiful house. It belonged to rich merchant.
From where he stood, he saw fine possessions, honorable guests, and plenty of workers and servants all set to work. He became envious and deeply wished to have everything the wealthy and powerful merchant did.
Suddenly, the stone cutter changed into the merchant taking over his mind and body. He was aware of the merchant’s innermost feelings, thoughts and memories. He felt the joy of owning all the luxuries in the world. He knew the pleasure of holding such a respectable position in the society. Many honored him.
After a few days of enjoying the merchant’s life, he saw a king being carried in a luxurious chair accompanied by attendants, soldiers and servants. Everyone, despite of their power and wealth, was forced to bow before this figure that was worshiped as God.
After seeing this, he realized he had been mistaken about the merchant’s power and status. In a split second, he moved into the body of the king, mighty and fearless. Then he knew what it felt like to be praised and glorified by the entire kingdom, to hold the power to pardon or take a man’s life and what it was like to be respected by kings from other lands.
One day, on a hot summer noon, he was extremely uneasy. His overweight body made the heat even more intolerable. He looked up at the sun and thought about how it was absolutely unaffected by his presence. He then swiftly became the sun, shining with glory, the source of life and strength of every living creature on the planet.
He continued to radiate until a massive storm cloud gathered below him blocking his rays. There was yet another force that faded the wind’s ego—a huge towering rock.

Paragraph 1:
He continued to radiate until a massive storm cloud gathered below him blocking his rays. The storm cloud then burst into pouring rain. Seeing this, he became the cloud. He felt the incredible power of its existence as it could flood everything that it wished to. Not too late did he realize that the entire root of his power was yet another force—wind. The strength of the rain was not worth mentioning without the wind. And so he became it, blowing off the roofs of houses, and uprooting trees and everything else that came in its way.
Paragraph 2:
There was yet another force that faded the wind’s ego—a huge towering rock. The wind would low against it with a speed and force of the ultimate strength. The rock would stand still and unmoved. He then became it, a solid, dense, immortal and powerful substance on earth. After a while, he heard a familiar sound, which was heard when a rock was stricken by a set of tools. He then felt himself being cut, and reformed. He looked down at the artist, the figure of a stone cutter! He then became a stone cutter again.
