I just flew from Berlin, Germany, to Atlanta, Georgia, and it took me 24 hours due to the weather-related delay during my stopover in New York. Like many other passengers, I was so worn out, annoyed, and helpless that I could barely hold it together.
The pilot, called Thierry Beyeler, was different. He left the flight deck and walked to the dissatisfied passengers to apologize and comfort them. The pilot's appropriate behavior set the tone and ensured no one got angry. It reminded me of the beauty of“elegance under pressure”.Thierry Beyeler was a pilot with Swiss International Air Lines, for which he flew various aircraft.During the delay, I had the chance to speak to Beyeler and learn about his experience as a pilot.
He said,“Flying is a bit like eating chocolate. I love every flight. However, when you have16 flights in four days, then that's too much chocolate for me...”. As for crisis situations, he did have a few:“Once, I had an engine failure, but that's rare, and we handled it. Another time, we had smoke in the cabin(机舱), and we went to land quickly. In the end, it was just the air conditioning having some problems…”He believes,“As Murphy’s law puts it,‘What can go wrong will go wrong’. So think about it and try to prepare mentally.’
Beyeler continued,“Compared with cars, a flight is a high-risk environment; it's not like riding a bike. Even if there was a minor error, it could have fatal consequences. Every pilot is quite professional in the field. But it is the strong mindset in the chaos that plays the key role.Humans intervene in technical systems to solve problems countless times a day, and it would be dangerous if the pilot became nervous and forgot . that.”
I've been touched by Beyeler's words. I understand that human factors, including confidence, courage, responsibility, and emotional intelligence, are becoming more and more important in today's world.

A. Depressed and tired. B. Calm and optimistic.
C. Helpless and anxious. D. Annoyed and sympathetic.

58. What does Beyeler consider critical, for pilots during emergencies
A. Gaining a good sense of time.
B. Having great strength of mind.
C. Knowing all the technical systems well.
D. Having a good grasp of professional knowledge.
59. What did the author think of his communication with Beyeler
A.Boring. B. Frightening. C. Rewarding. D.Confusing.
60. Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A. An adventurous trip to Atlanta.
B. The potential crisis situations on the plane.
C. Major factors influencing traffic safety.
D. The lessons from the pilot Beyeler.

U. S. growers produced $2.2 billion in strawberries in 2020, mostly in California, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. But consumers discarded an estimated 35% of strawberries due to spoilage. To reduce consumer waste, the J.R. Sim-plot Company and Plant Sciences Inc. have teamed up to edit the DNA of strawberries and make these new-improved fruits available on the commercial market.
The new technology will improve the shelf life of strawberries and extend their growing season. What's more, it may help . farmers achieve higher production on less land, with reduced water and labor needs. In this way, farmers can grow healthier strawberry plants more efficiently, and the fruits will. stay fresh for longer.
The companies will use CRISPR-Cas9 to edit the strawberries’ genes. This technology works like the cut-and-paste command on a computer: It allows scientists to identify a gene in the strawberry and cut it out. Then, they can sew the two ends of the gene back together or replace the old gene with the one that codes for an improvement.
Using CRISPR-Cas9 technology is much faster and more efficient than the selective breeding of cross, which can take years. It consists of crossing plants with the most desirable qualities over and over again until the ideal plant is achieved. ButCRISPR-Cas9 allows scientists to come straight to the point and avoid spending much time on plant breeding. Plants modified by CRISPR-Cas9 technology are nearly the same as plants bred using traditional methods.
“We are still working with everything that nature has provided. With traditional breeding, whatever features nature has kicked out of the DNA, that's the hand you have been played,” Zachary Lippman, a plant biologist, told National Geographic.“With gene editing, now you are having an ace (王牌) up your sleeve.”The two companies are currently working on mapping out the genes of their strawberry varieties so they can identify which genes code for which features. If successful, they’ll launch the first commercially available gene-edited strawberries in the next years.
61. What does the underlined word“discarded”in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Threw away. B. Mixed up. C. Broke down. D. Picked up.

B. He likes fruits with longer shelf lives.
C. He will help perfect the technology.
D. He is hopeful about the technology.

We are in the midst of a battle for our attention. Our devices have affected our brains and destroyed our collective ability to concentrate. Journalist Johann Hair's new book, Stolen Focus, has just joined the voice s complaining about the great influence of the digital age. His and other recent books reflect a public perception that our focus is under attack.
Indeed, in out new research, we found some clear concerns. We surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,093 UK adults in 2021. Half of those surveyed felt their attention ans were shorter than they used to be, compared with a quarter who didn't. And three quarters of participants agreed we're living through a time when there's non-stop competition for our attention between a variety of media channels and information outlets(渠道).
There has long been a worry about the threat to attention brought by new cultural forms, whether that's social media or the cheap paperback sensation novels of the 19th century. Even as far back as ancient Greece, the philosopher Socrates complained that the written words created“forgetfulness in our souls”. There has always been a tendency to fear the effects that new media and technologies will have on our minds.
The reality is that we simply don't have long-term studies that tell us whether our attention spans have actually shrunk. What we do know from our study is that people overestimate some of the problems. There's no such thing as an average attention span. Our ability to focus varies hugely depending on the individual and the task at hand.
It's also important not to ignore the many benefits that technology brings to our life. Much of the public surveyed recognized these, o while half thought big tech and social media were ruining young people's attention spans, roughly another half felt that being easily distracted was more to do with people's personalities than any negative influence that tech ho logy may or may not have. Also, half of the public believed multitasking at work and switching frequently between emails, phone calls, and other tasks can create a more efficient and satisfactory work experience.
66. What might be the theme of the books mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. The main focus of social media
B.`The great influence of public opinion.
C. The attention crisis in the digital age.
D. The fierce competition in the digital age.
57. What can we know about some of the participants in the new research
A. They were frequently disturbed by digital devices.
B. They felt it hard to acquire useful information online.
C. They had shorter attention spans than average people.
D. They felt challenged by fierce competition from others.
68. Why does the author mention Socrates in Paragraph 3
A. To stress new cultural forms have limitations.
B. To show worry about attention is an age-old problem.
C. To prove the important role he played in literary history
D. To explain cultural differences between the past and the present.
69. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. People tend to overestimate their ability es.
B. Digital distractions might have potential benefits.
C. Technology's benefits have been largely ignored.
D. Switching between different tasks frequently is difficult.
0. What message does the author want to convey
A. Digital devices can benefit our work.
B. We should say “No”to digital devices.
C. We should think highly of new cultural forms.
D. Digital distractions really affect us so much.

第一部分:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
It was a Friday afternoon. I was riding a bus home from school. At the bus stop before my destination, a few boys got off the bus.“Bye, Big Nose!”one of them said, waving to me. He and his friends laughed and got off the bus. My cheeks flushed(满脸通红) with embarrassment.I knew I didn't have a tiny and delicate nose, but I had never thought of my nose as a particularly big one. I immediately covered my nose with my hands.
I went home immediately when I got off the bus. I came to the bathroom and looked at myself in profile(从侧面) in the mirror. Oh, no!I did have a big nose! Even worse , there was a slight bump(肿块) in my nose at the bridge. I experimented, putting the sunglasses on. They helped hide the. bump. If only I could wear sunglasses all the time! Then I tried pressing down my nose. But when I took my finger away, it regained its shape. After two hours in the bathroom,I came out, feeling hopeless.
Days later, my family came over to my grandfather's house for dinner. When we reached, climbed upstairs and found Grandpa in his bedroom, staring at a photograph.“Dally!”he smiled. But his eyes looked sad. My grandma passed away when I was in kindergarten. “Is that Grandma ”I asked. It was a black-and-white photo of a young woman with short blond hair and wide, pretty eyes. She was smiling at the camera as if she knew a wonderful secret.“Yeah,”Grandpa replied. I said,“She's so beautiful.”
Grandpa added,“Inside and out. Next to you, of course.”“Thanks, Grandpa.”But I knew he was just being nice. And I knew I had a big nose,“You're almost a carbon copy of your grandma,”Grandpa said.“Just look at your nose. You got your profile from your grandma. And there was also a tiny bump at the bridge of her nose,”he added.
That was the day I began to love my nose. I think my grandma Auden in some way is kept alive through my own nose with its beautiful bump.
