“Selfie” may have been named Oxford Dictionary’s word of 2013. In effect,so widely known has the selfie become that in the past 12 months, its frequency in the English language has increased by 17000 percent, said Oxford dictionaries. However, its popularity has just earned it another honour-being voted the most annoying and overused term of the past 12 months. But I’d like to offer that maybe it isn’t so bad.
According to the Oxford online dictionary, selfie is a photo that one takes of oneself, often from a smart phone, and send them to a social media website. Women and men alike decorate their Facebook and Twitter accounts with these pictures, sometimes with exaggerated facial expressions, such as large smiles or puckered lips(噘嘴).
Let’s think about it. Someone takes about 10 selfies each time they do,and they only end up posting one or two of those. They pick the one that they feel makes them look the best. Isn’t that beautiful In that one picture, somebody has given himself or herself confidence. Self-image is vital. In today’s society,we are so crazy about being perfect. But perhaps, with that one selfie,we feel as if we fit that need. We feel handsome, beautiful, confident, smart, happy, and content. For that moment, everything bad or terrible that has ever happened to us seemed to have been erased, for that smile or that pucker is what gives us the determination to love ourselves.
A spoken-word poem I saw lately set me thinking:If I ask you what you love, the answers will most likely roll of your tongue. You love to read. You love to write. You love birds, music…your mom, your brother, your sister, your daughter, your best friend, your dog. How long do you think you could go on and on before you said,“I love myself.”
The poem hit me like a ton of bricks. I’ve struggled with confidence all of my life. And I still do. And in no way am I saying that taking a selfie is a gateway to that confidence. However, the selfie does deserve some credit for allowing individuals to express themselves. Just as Pamela Rutledge put it,“There are many more photographs available now of real people than models.”
4.According to the writer, we live in a society where ________.
A.selfie leads to success
B.a good image decides one’s status

D.being perfect is highly valued
5.The spoken-word poem mentioned in the 4th paragraph implies ________.
A.our pleasure to enjoy beauty

D.our real love to share with others
6.What does the underlined word “credit” in the last paragraph mean
A.praise B.grade C.trust D.fame
7.In the writer’s opinion, selfie ________.
A.brings about people’s sense of confidence
B.is merely popular among teenagers
C.tells the true meaning of life
D.is an annoying phenomenon on the Internet
A table-waiting robot cat built by a Chinese technology firm can carry plates of food, navigate a restaurant, miaow at diners and even react to having its ears stroked (抚摸).
Making its debut at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the so-called BellaBot was built for Chinese restaurants lacking enough waiters.
It is the brainchild of the Chinese robotics and artificial intelligence firm PuduTech. It features four shelves in the centre of its tower-like body to carry plates. Having been loaded up with meals by its human colleagues, the cat-themed robotic waiter miaows when it delivers food to diners to encourage them to take their plates. If customers thank BellaBot by stroking its ears, it will respond with a look of pleasure on its on-board screen, which displays animations of a cat’s face. “The owner’s hand is so warm,” BellaBot has been programmed to respond.
However, much like a real cat, the robot’s reaction soon changes if it is petted for too long. “It gets mad to remind you not to interrupt its job,” the designers introduced. The BellaBot waiter robot is a more personality-rich update to PuduTech’s previous model, which featured a more utilitarian (实用主义的) design and user interface.
Both BellaBot and its predecessor were designed with a particular mind to Chinese restaurants which are often short of waiting staff.
In a real-world food-service setting, however, BellaBot may find it difficult to operate at peak times. Nevertheless, restaurants are expected to increase their reliance on automation whether in the form of robotic waiting staff or otherwise. Furthermore, improvements in technology will see consumer robot designs grow steadily better at communicating with humans and facing new activities.
8.The underlined word “debut” in the second paragraph probably means_____.
A.first production B.first sale
C.first appearance D.first design
9.The robot cat is able to do the following except_____.
A.load plates by itself and deliver food to diners
B.help diners find seats in a restaurant

D.remind diners not to pet it for too long
10.The text is mainly written to_____.
A.make an advertisement
B.introduce an updated invention
C.predict future robot designs
D.solve the problems Chinese restaurants are facing
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.Chinese robotics and artificial intelligence
B.A Chinese technology firm
C.Improvements in robot design
D.Table-waiting robot cat
Does Music Make You Run Faster
An expert on the effects of music on exercise, Dr. Costas Karageorghis, claims that listening to music while running can raise performance by up to 15%. To put this theory to the test, I took part in a special half marathon, which had groups of musicians playing at various points along the route.
As I was at the start, a singer sang an inspiring song for us. It may explain why I got off to a good start. But apart from the song at the start, I can hardly remember the music played along the course. “Outstanding runners”, says Karageorghis, “tend to focus on themselves when they are running.” According to him, most other runners look for encouragement and distraction from what is going on around them. It is true. Then what did other runners make of the music Adam Bull usually runs marathons with no music and little crowd support. “The music here has been great for my performance. With the cheerful bands, you find yourself running to the beat, which helps.”
The only person I found who was less than happy with the music was Lois Lloyd. “I found the music wasn’t loud enough, so I ran with an MP 3 player.” she said. “I need my music all the time.”Karageorghis is not surprised when I tell him. “There are many advantages to using your own player, rather than relying on the music on the course,” he says.
“It gives you a constant encouragement, and you can change the playlist to your taste.”
One runner told me there was a direct connection between the quality of the music on the course and how much it helped. But quality, of course, is based on personal opinions.
Of course, the music was not only there to help runners break their personal bests, but to provide a sense of occasion, draw out the crowds and create a festival atmosphere. Along with some spring sunshine, it certainly achieved that.
12.Why did the author take part in a special half marathon
A.To win a prize. B.To test a theory.
C.To enjoy the music. D.To do some exercise.
13.According to the passage, Dr. Costas Karageorghis may believe that______.
A.music brings more benefits to outstanding runners
B.music can help improve people’s performance in running
C.music with high quality helps much in running in half marathon
D.music on the course works better than that in runners’ own players
14.What is the author’s attitude to the function of music to running
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Uncertain.

六、读后续写(共20分)
46.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I cheated on a unit test in math class this morning. Afterwards, I was too sick to eat lunch just thinking about it.
Yesterday, Mr. Burke announced there’d be a unit test and anyone who didn’t pass would have to come to school on Saturday, most particularly me, since I didn’t pass the last unit test.
Just when I was ready to work, Nicho came into my room with our new rabbit and it jumped on my desk and knocked the flashcards all over the floor.
I yelled for my mother to come and help, but Carlotta was crying as usual.
Anyway, Nicho and I took the rabbit outside but then Philip came to my room and also Marty from next door, and before long it was a dinner. After dinner my father said I could watch a special on television if I’d done all my homework.
Of course I said I had.
That was the beginning. I felt terrible telling my father a lie about the homework. My parents don’t bother making up a lot of rules. But we do have to tell the truth—— even if it’s bad, which it usually is.
It was nine o'clock when I got up to my room and that was too late to study for the unit test so I lay in my bed with the light off.
So, you see, the cheating was planned after all.
I’d go into class jolly as usual, acting like things were going just great. I’d sit down next to Stanley Plummer and from time to time, I’d glance over at his paper to copy the answers.
And that’s exactly what I did this morning. It was a piece of cake. Everything was okay except that my stomach was upside down.
Now all of a sudden I’ve turned into this criminal. It’s hard to believe I’m just a boy. And all because of one stupid math test.
I tell my mother I’m sick when she calls me to come down for dinner.
Lying in bed in the early winter darkness wondering what terrible thing I’ll be doing next when my father comes in and sits down on my bed.

“What’s the matter ” he asks. “My stomach is feeling sort of upset,” I say. “Is that all ” my father says, I can tell he doesn’t believe me. Just as he shuts the door I call out to him in a trembling voice. “How come ” he calls back not surprised or anything. So I tell him I cheated on the math test. To tell the truth, I didn’t plan to tell him anything. He doesn’t say anything at first and that just about kills me.
And then he says I’ll have to call Mr. Burke. It’s not what I had in mind. “Now ” I ask unbelievably. “Now,” he insists. He turns on the light and pulls off my covers. I have no choice but to call Mr. Burke and tell him exactly what happened. He says I’ll come on Saturday to take another test, and I thank him a lot for being understanding. “Today I thought I was turning into a criminal,” I tell my father when he turns out my light. He just smiles and kisses me good night. (165 words)
